It’s bound to happen, no matter how good of an employee you might be, there will more than likely be a time where you are going to annoy the boss. Sometimes it might be right and just, but other times it might be for no fault of your own and the boss is just looking for someone to blame and to take it out on. Either way, you need to know how to handle the boss when this kind of situation arises. The last thing you want is to end up in the job search line with the multitude of job seekers out there in today’s unemployment lines.
The most important thing you can do in this situation is to keep calm and composed, especially if you know that you did nothing wrong. It simply doesn’t matter at this point. You’re the focus of your boss and no matter what you are the one in the hot seat. It’s in our nature to go on the defense but we need to fight that urge to bark back. It will only make matters worse, plain and simple.
As you take in the information or fire that your boss may be throwing at you, stay calm and take it all in while still showing respect for the boss during the whole tirade he might be throwing at you. Even if you know for a fact that it was not something that you did, promise him that you will do everything you can to fix the situation and improve upon it.
You need to do your best to try and end this kind of conversation as quickly as you possibly can. The reason for this is that you boss might start getting angrier and angrier the more he goes on and on talking. Do your best to try and get out of the conversation with tact.
After all of the fuss is over from the confrontation it’s a good idea to try and reach out to your boss in a sincere manner. Approach him and ask him if he has any suggestions on how you can improve your performance on the job. This will help to get rid of any blowups in the future but it’s going to make you look good at the same time. He’ll start seeing you as someone who knows how to take the initiative and that you are looking for a future with the company.
If you are not sure if what you are doing is wrong, make sure that you talk to other employees and ask them what they have noticed and if they might have any suggestions that might help you improve the things that you do. Get the advice from veteran employees that probably have been in the same situation as you.
If you have an anti-harassment policy for your workplace, you may think your business is protected from allegations of a hostile work environment. Not necessarily. Even employers who outline a harassment policy may not be going far enough to prevent or correct harassment at the workplace.
It is true that employers have an affirmative defense against an employee’s claim of a hostile work environment created by a supervisor. In 1998, the U.S. Supreme Court established that an employer may defend itself against harassment at the workplace charges by proving:
- It exercised reasonable care in order to prevent and promptly correct charges of harassment at the workplace by a supervisor.
- The worker who filed the complaint failed to take advantage of the preventative or corrective opportunities offered by the employer.
But are employers doing enough to meet the criteria of that defense?
The court system does not think so, especially in regards to proving reasonable care to promptly correct harassment at the workplace. In the 2011 Winchester case, an employer defended itself from a harassment suit by pointing to its Code of Business Conduct, which outlined the company’s anti-harassment policy. The employer provided that anti-harassment policy to workers in a handbook and through the company intranet.
The employer lost the case. Why? Although the company had a policy in print, the court found no evidence that it took any specific courses of action to prevent harassment at the workplace. For example, the court said it found no indication the employer reviewed the policy with employees and supervisors. There was also no evidence the company trained employees on the harassment policy either at the time of their hire or at any time afterward. As a result, the court ruled the employer did not prove it had exercised reasonable care to promptly address harassment at the workplace.
This isn’t the only case in which courts found an employer was not properly preventing harassment at work. The Winchester case cited a series of decisions that had also rejected the argument that an anti-harassment policy alone constituted reasonable care to prevent and correct harassment at the workplace.
What are the responsibilities of an employer in preventing harassment at work?
Adding a harassment prevention policy to an employee handbook is a good start when it comes to preventing a hostile work environment-but it is not enough. Here are specific actions to consider that may boost your defense against employee allegations:
- Implement regular supervisor and manager harassment at the workplace training to ensure everyone understands the company’s anti-harassment policy. Keep track of all session attendees.
- Give every employee a copy of the policy. Introduce new hires to the anti-harassment policy during the orientation session.

Employment merely allows for the career to begin but for such career to grow and become fruitful, preparations must be had at the earliest possible time. Career talks at school are very important for the students to map out their career path from employment to retirement if possible. These career talks enhances the student’s strategic planning for one’s career and ensures that he or she remains on the right path towards the realization of such plan. The earlier one prepares and begins to realize the growth of his or her career, the more time one has to enjoy these fruits of hard work and perseverance. Careers begin any time of your life. It need not be during your middle age period. Even young and fresh graduates can start realizing a career that one is certain to enjoy and reap benefits thereafter.
